The Dimmest Light explores the three distinct ranges–chalumeau, throat tones and clarino–on the clarinet. The work starts with a descending quarter-tone melody on the throat tones range, superimposed by another descending melody on the chalumeau range which is joined by a similar melody on the clarino range. Besides the exploration of the instrument range, the dynamic character of the clarinet which allows it to make a sound from nothing and to nithing is also featured in this quiet work.
This is a recording premiered by Eric Ginsberg, the dedicatee of the work, during the 38th New Music Festival at Western Illinois University in 2025.
