When Stolen Time Becomes Fixed Time (2021) for flute/piccolo, clarinet/bass clarinet and oboe
The title was inspired by a paragraph from a book titled “The Art of Stealing Time” by Louis Andriessen. In this paragraph, Andriessen compares the role of a composer to that of a painter. He says that the painter appropriates color into an artwork while the composer steals time and put it on a staff paper to create music which is how stolen time becomes fixed time. Only five pitches – D, F#, G, A, C – are used in this composition. The recording is the premiere on April 15, 2022 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Hamel Music Center by the Magnolia Trio with Lucas Glander on the flute and piccolo, Amanda Stezenski on the clarinet and bass clarinet, and Hanna Noughani on the oboe.
